  Start a course

Team roles
For the course to run smoothly, you will need to fill four positions.

These are:
Course administrator
Small-group leader
Small-group helper: inviter
Small-group helper: a follow-up worker

If you have more than one small group, you will need leaders and helpers for each small group. The team may represent different workplaces and churches.

Course administrator
Every course requires an administrator - someone who can get the course established and keep it going.

This person should have:

Enthusiasm
a desire to do the job and do it well
Time a flexible personal timetable
Energy the ability to persevere when faced with challenges
Sense of humour a capacity to laugh, especially at oneself
Interpersonal skills a genuine love for people
Humility a willingness to work behind the scenes as well as up front
Organisational skills a talent for juggling activities and responsibilities

Without a strong administrator, an Alpha in the Workplace course will not be successful. If you’re missing any of the above attributes, consider appointing someone else to assist you.

The small-group leader
This person is a facilitator - someone who encourages open discussion and puts the guests at ease. Each week, the leader poses questions to the guests in a non-threatening manner. The leader’s role is to listen and ask follow-up questions.

See the Alpha Leaders’ Guide and Alpha Leaders’ Training Video for small-group discussion guidelines.

Small-group helper: inviter*
The ‘inviter’ is someone who knows lots of different people, invites as many colleagues as possible and participates with them throughout. It is often very encouraging for guests to know that the person inviting them will also be participating in the course.

Small-group helper: follow-up person*
This can be either the leader or helper in the small group who agrees beforehand to continue with the group after the course has ended. Often small groups have built strong friendships and wish to carry on meeting, perhaps to study the Bible.

*The role of the small-group helper also includes:

- fostering a sense of community by welcoming everyone each week and introducing guests to each other

- assisting the course leader with thought-provoking comments or questions that help the discussion to stay on course
